That's not surprising if you know the history of the original document. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen the declaration was\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e finished and signed at Washington-on-the-Brazos, a rider was dispatched to San Felipe de Austin with a handwritten copy. Gail Borden worked through the night to set the type and print a hundred copies on 13 by 16 inch paper. Borden used the same small type he used to print his newspaper, the Telegraph \u0026amp; Texas Register.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eBefore 1944, almost no one\u003c\/strong\u003e in Texas had ever seen what one of those original printings looked like. That was the year Lou Kemp completed his book on the signers.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eHe wanted something special to give away with the limited edition of the book, so Andrew Jackson Houston allowed his father's copy to be photographed to produce a facsimile.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eAll the reproductions you find today are third and fourth generation copies to Lou Kemp's facsimile. He was a charter member of the Texas State Historical Association.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eJohn Washington Darlington (1821–1915) of Taylor. He fought in the Battle of Plum Creek, fought against Vasquez and Woll during the raids of 1842, helped build the first capitol building at Austin. He also ranched and served in a ranging company during the Civil War.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAsa Collinsworth Hill of Oakville (1826-1913) - He doesn't really belong with this group, as he didn't serve during the republic years, though his father and brothers did. Sam Houston took him to Washington as his personal secretary when he became senator in 1846. Hill commanded a spy company during the Mexican War. He was a Texas Ranger captain before the Civil War\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStephen Franklin Sparks of Rockport (1817-1908). He took part in the Siege of Bexar and fought at the Battle of San Jacinto.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLevi \"Uncle Lee\" Lawler of Florence (1826-1915). He served in a ranging company while still a teen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlphonso Steele of Mexia \u003cspan\u003e(1817-1911)\u003c\/span\u003e. He was the last surviving participant of the Battle of San Jacinto. It held its first convention at Houston in 1873, with about seventy-five veterans present.
