One Thing!
This is an ugly map.
Maybe that's a little harsh. It's not a fancy, engraved, hand-colored map that shows every known detail of the topography, every road, and every town.
This map does one thing: Railroads.
It shows all the railroads of Texas as they existed, or were being built in 1881. It gives every stop on each line, along with its distance from the head of the line.
It was produced for the Galveston News by A. B. Langermann. A German immigrant, Langermann cut his teeth working as a draftsman under Charles Pressler at the General Land Office.
He knew Texas and he knew maps. At the time he drew this map, he was working as Texas land agent for the International and Great Northern Railway. So he knew railroads too.
The great thing about this map is the small towns get equal billing with the cities. It illustrates the geographic relationship between those towns and helps you understand Texas and moving around the state like your ancestors understood it.
That's a beautiful accomplishment for an ugly map.
