A. J. Houston's Alamo Plaza Composite - 1938

Drawn by Sam Houston's Son

Andrew Jackson Houston was the second son of General Sam and Margaret.

He practiced law, led a troop of Rough Riders under Teddy Roosevelt and from 1924 to 1941 was superintendent of the San Jacinto Battleground.

It was during that period that he began to research and write on subjects of Texas history. That's how this map came about.

A. J. Houston combined the drawings and notes of Texian Army Captain Green B. Jameson (January 1836), Mexican Army Colonel Ignacio Labastida (March 1836) and US Army Captain Reuben Potter (1841) to create this composite showing the Alamo compound as it was during the siege and battle.

It gives the dimension of each feature, shows the location or the Alamo cannons, and notes where the bodies of Travis, Bowie, and Crockett were pointed out to Santa Anna by Acalde Ruiz after the battle.

It's as handsome as it is interesting.
