The Alamo as the Defenders Knew It

Thomas Falconer was an English lawyer who gave up law to seek adventure in Texas in 1841.

Upon arrival, he signed on to the Santa Fe Expedition as an observer. Over the next several months he had his horse stolen, was attacked by Indians, captured by the Mexican Army and was marched to Mexico City.

There he was released to the British minister, decided he had had enough of this adventure business, and sailed home.

He made this sketch in April of 1841, while passing through San Antonio on his way to Austin. It shows the Alamo chapel as the Texian defenders would have known it.

Notice the saints are still present in the upper alcoves. They were gone by 1847.
