Early automobiles ran an a variety of fuels, but none were plentiful enough to allow the industry to blossom.
Spindletop changed that. An abundant supply of gasoline had car companies popping up like toadstools.
Without fuel to run them, Henry Ford had no chance of selling cars to the masses.
